Eyes on the prize

Nearly 9 months from now, I will be packing my things way, reminiscing on the summer memories and enjoying my last few days of freedom. Trying to get a few more days-worth of sun so I can have a tan when I go to school.

Except I won't be going back to Nashville for school. Now don't get worried, I am still a student at Trevecca. But I will be spending a semester away from the school, in the one of the country's busiest news sources-Washington D.C.; this is all assuming that I'll get into the semester-long journalism program.

I have only recently declared a major. Getting out of high school, I was determined to be a radio broadcaster. Because what could be better than going to work in your pajamas and getting paid to talk all day? I assumed this was the career choice for me since I did well on my high school's speech team in Radio Speaking. So since I'm good at it, I should pursue it as a career, right?

But I really didn't have a passion for it. The technology aspect confused me, and I didn't really enjoy the couple of media classes I had taken. So in one of my required courses, I was put in a class with a professor who knew all about journalism. It was as if it ran through her veins. And she convinced me to join the world of journalism. But I have discovered that I love it! More than the writing part, I actually really enjoy the reporting. I love taking a step into peoples' lives to see what they're involved in and exploring new things. The writing is just the icing on the cake.

A semester in DC is not quite the cheapest option for a semester of college, so I've learned. This next year will be really difficult for me, because I'm really not good at saving money. But I am working on throwing away some old habits I have to work on my spending efforts.

1. No more extra snacks in my dorm (I can load up stuff from the Caf and keep that in my room. It's free).

2.. No more excessive spending at Walmart (because stuff adds up there real quick).

3. No more shopping just because I'm bored and have nothing else to do.

4. No more constant trips to get coffee. (By that I mean, once a week now as opposed to three or four tmies).

Saving will be super stressful for me, but I know it'll be so worth it in the end. Just gotta keep my eyes on the prize.
